Spring Orchid Camp Schedule

We’ve just set up the schedule for the spring series of our orchid culture classes here at the nursery. You can download the schedule information right here. Send us your registration soon! Tip: if you have trouble viewing the brochure in your broswer, download the file to your computer and view it with Adobe Acrobat Reader. Some web browser PDF-viewers don’t handle displaying the file very well.

If you can’t come to Homestead for orchid culture classes, remember that we have culture pages here on the site. We have a culture sheet for cattleyas, for phalaenopsis, for vandas, four sheets for different groups of dendrobiums, and another one with tips on making your orchids bloom.

Valentine’s Day is Feb. 14

Don’t forget your Sweetie! Please give us time to pack and ship – weather permitting! — your Valentine’s day orders, so make sure we have your order no later than Monday, Feb. 6. We also have gift cards, and we don’t have to wait for good weather to send a gift card, so this could be an option if you’re somewhere wintry.

Now Showing

The first buds on the jade vine continue to develop! No flowers yet, but we hope to have some in another couple of weeks as this breathtaking tropical vine begins its blooming cycle. Stay tuned, we’ll let you know when the flowers begin to open. If you’ve never seen a jade vine, you have to experience it! Meanwhile the Indian clock vine has been producing a few more stems of flowers, so we expect a big show on that vine soon.

Lots of orchids are in spike to bloom soon, too. We have flowers coming on the specimen Onc. sphacelatums and the Smbc. Diamond Head. The Onc. Twinkles are still in full bloom, we’ve had intermittent flowers on the vanilla vines, the Cattleya aurantiacas are in full bloom and the big Lc. Gold Digger is just starting to bloom. One of our big Cattleya skinneri plants is in full bloom and we expect more of them to flower soon.

You can see all of this, and lots more, on one of our free weekend garden tours. Every Saturday and Sunday, weather permitting (read: not raining), we escort a 45-60 minute walking tour of Bob’s and Mike’s private garden at 11am and 3pm. No reservation is necessary, just be here a few minutes before start-time. Meet your guide at the bridge. (For a nominal fee, we can arrange private garden tours for groups at other times, please contact us for details.)

A Note About Winter Shipping

At this time of year we may hold your order if we believe the weather conditions are unsuitable for standard shipping. We do monitor the weather daily, and we’ll ship as soon as we think it’s safe to do so. We appreciate your patience during weather-related delays. Expedited (overnight) shipping may be an option, at an additional charge. We do not use “heat packs”. Conditions here in south Florida are warm; if we put a heat pack in the box before shipping the plants will be cooked long before the box gets to its destination.
